Uber Eats is the on-demand food delivery platform founded by Uber in the year 2014. It is an online food ordering application that can be used to get food from your local restaurants using the Uber Eats website or mobile app.
Your location is detected by the application and a list of restaurants nearest to you is displayed. You can then choose from the ones that are open. An Uber Eats driver will pick up the food from the restaurant and deliver it to your doorstep.

What exactly do Uber Eats drivers do?
The entire process of picking up and delivering an order for Uber Eats works like this.
Enabling and Disabling Deliveries
To start delivering, you need to use the Uber mobile application. Inside the app, you can open the Trip Planner menu at the bottom of the screen.
Use the Driving Preferences to enable and disable deliveries if you are also an Uber driver. Click on Save to save your settings.
You can work as per your convenience enabling and disabling deliveries as you want.
Accepting the Order
As soon as a delivery is available in your vicinity, you will be sent a notification. You will have 15-30 seconds to accept the order.
Should you choose to accept it, you will be directed to the restaurant where you have to pick up the order. You will get information about the order, the order number and the customer details.
You can be sent to pick up more than one order at the same restaurant.
Collecting the Order
You don’t have to worry about dealing with money since all payments are handled by Uber and the customer.
On reaching the restaurant, you’ll have to pick up the correct order according to the order number. Make sure that you handle the food appropriately; an insulated delivery bag is a plus.
Making the Delivery
You will be provided with navigation to your delivery location. You can change the default delivery application from Uber to Google Maps or Waze if you want.
You will have an estimated time for delivery which will be the same as the customer. You don’t have to stick to this time limit, but it is advisable you do so.
You can text your customer on the app to let them know you are on the way. In this way, you can arrange them to meet the customer on the curbside instead of having to go till their door.
At each step of the process, you have to select the stage of delivery you are at in the Uber Eats app. Once you are done with the order, you can update the delivery status on the app.
Note: The Uber Eats app will keep notifying you of all orders in your proximity as long as you have deliveries enabled. You can disable deliveries to stop receiving notifications about orders.
How much money can I make with Uber Eats?
The amount of money you can earn using Uber Eats depends on the density of orders depending on your area of delivery, the time of day as well as the number of hours you actually spend driving.
In a smaller city, you might get to drive longer distances; but bigger cities have more pings and more orders. More orders are placed on the weekends than on weekdays, so earnings are higher then.
After factoring in vehicle expenses (such as gas, insurance, wear and tear, repairs, etc. ), you can earn around $8 to $12 for every hour making deliveries. This can go up to $20 in bigger cities.
One Uber driver has stated that he gets paid approximately $3.50 for every pickup, $1.10 for every mile of driving, and $1.30 for every delivery. This was in Los Angeles.
This is just an estimate and is primarily based on the individual driver.
You will be paid a fee for picking up the order, dropping the order as well as for mileage from the driving time between picking up the order and delivering it to the customer. This is with respect to a single order.
Payments are made separately for every individual order.
Uber takes 25% of the order as fees. If the customer cancels the order after you have already collected it, you will still be paid for it.

Uber dictates that tips are not expected or required, but most customers still offer to pay a tip. However, with the dip in cash payments, tips are getting fewer in number.
Uber also has in-app tipping so that customers can tip you using the app itself. After your delivery, the customer can choose to add a tip to your salary. Some drivers have reported receiving both in-app tips as well as tips in cash on delivery.
The tips you earn belong wholly to you.
Uber has different promotional offers to multiply your earnings while using Uber Eats delivery.
During certain times of the day, Uber creates ‘Boost’ areas in certain parts of the city. Whatever you earn delivering in those areas will get multiplied by a specific factor.
This way you will have more impetus to drive around in that particular area where demands are high. The multiplier will be applied to your net earnings after subtracting Uber fees and excluding any tips that you earn.

During times of high-demand, another multiplier called Uber Surge can be applied. This too is applied to net delivery earnings.
Surge and Boost can both be applied at the same time. But Surge pricing is less reliable than that of Boost.
